New Pathway for Canadians to Permanent Residence for Caregivers

International caregivers who landed in Canada after November 30, 2014, but weren’t able to meet the criteria for permanent residency, are offered with another chance to settle in the country through a new interim pathway that comes into effect from 4th March 2019 and will continue till June 4, 2019.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced about this short-term pathway, along with the upcoming launch of two improved five-year pilot programs under which spouses and dependent children can join caregivers residing and working in Canada and also provides, the direct gateway to be a permanent resident after two years.

Temporary pathway for Caregivers

The three-month short-duration pathway is applicable only for Caregivers, who have Canadian work experience as a home childcare provider, home support worker or a permutation of both through Canadian’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program since 30th November 2014.

This interim pathway for Caregivers is valid for the ones who have the intention of living outside of Quebec and who have:

2. applied for a renewal of a work permit other than a Live-in Caregiver Program work permit; or
3. applied and is eligible for restoration of status, and held a work permit other than a Live-in Caregiver Program work permit as their most recent work permit; and
4. language skills of at least a CLB/NCLC 5 in English or French; and
5. 12 months of full-time work experience in Canada since November 30, 2014, in a relevant occupation; and
6. a minimum of a Canadian high school diploma or non-Canadian educational diploma, certificate or credential that’s equal to a Canadian high school diploma.
7. Foreign credentials will require an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) — issued within five years before the date of application by an approved organization — that indicates that the foreign diploma, certificate or credential is equivalent to a completed Canadian secondary school diploma.

The candidates whose education is from outside Canada and who are unable to get an ECA prior to the Interim pathway for Caregivers closes on June 4, 2019, still holds the position of being eligible if they manage to show evidence that they have applied to get an ECA. The evidence includes written confirmation from the agency that the applicant has requested for an ECA or for receipt of payment. The limit of intake of applications is not mentioned by IRCC that how many applications will be accepted under this pathway.
